Can you imagine what it's like
calling in a coyote, bobcat, fox, badger, mountain lion and even
bear, watching them come towards you with eyes focused on your
location? This thrill is shared by hunters and
photographers alike who answer the challenge of using handheld calls
and electronics to bring 'em in close... sometimes to within
mere feet. I accepted this challenge 35 years ago and have never
tired of the amazing variety of wildlife that has come nose to nose
with me. There have been many times when I was afraid,
startled and oftentimes highly amused.
My name is Jay Nistetter and I
am a part-time hunter, photographer, writer, book publisher,
videographer, director, editor, speaker and call maker.
I
started making custom predator calls in 1990.
In 2002, I published my first
book with the help of Al Lux called "Predator Calls,
The First 50 Years" which is about the history of
commercially produced predator calls. This book took quite a
very long time to put together. The huge amount of predator
calls featured in this book is a culmination of four different
collections, taking the very best of each collection.
This book contains several color photographs on every single
page to show your the many variations of calls offered since
1948. This book serves as a history book as well as a
reference book, coffee table book and collecting
guide.
In 2004, I produced my first
video about Coyote Behavior. Many people have
told me there was a great need for "something" that shows what
coyotes are doing as they are approaching the sound of a
predator call. The only videos available were hunting videos
that only talked about equipment with a few coyotes approaching
with lots of back patting and "hero shots". This video
discussed what the coyotes are actually doing and when is a good
time to shoot. After watching this video, you will be able to
tell whether the coyote is ready to leave or come on in. You
will also be able to tell if there are more than one coyotes even
though you cannot see them. I have included something for the
camera buff as well as a blooper section showing that everything is
not just about guns and coyotes. The comaraderie of any trip
outdoors produces longer lasting memories.
January
2006 saw the introduction of my second video which is actually a
double feature on one disk entitled “Interview With A Coyote” and
“FB’s Coyote Rodeo”.
This video was a departure from the norm in that it was
produce with the younger generation in mind as well as a teaching
aid for adults. My main
focus centered around 2 animated characters with each providing
different perspectives.
There is a need to generate hunting and fishing interest
among youngsters at a level they can relate with and this creative
venue is a tremendous help to parents in introducing children to
world out of doors.
The
children’s video was so well received that August 2006 saw a refined
DVD sequel introducing the first (of hopefully many) episode of the
“Outdoor Bear Adventures”.
Volume 1 entitled CCSI (Coyote Crime Scene
Investigations) Coyote Down.
This is a team venture with Byron South. Future episode
ideas include fishing, turkey hunting, waterfowl, deer, wild hog and
more. It is truly amazing how children of all ages become so
absorbed when watching this video.
All this was done as a
labor of love for the sport of predator calling.
Patience, stealth and an
unyielding love for the outdoors and wildlife it contains is the
mark of a true predator caller.
